Project 17: Goodbye Preschool toy box

Well the time finally came for the girls to leave their preschool.  The school has been part of our lives about a week after Gorgeous Jerry and the kids arrived in New Zealand.  This has therefore been the close of quite a special chapter.

With all of our kids having spent time at Browns Bay Preschool we wanted to make them something special to say thanks for everything.  To be honest I was saying thanks for putting up with all of us and not pointing us in another direction in search of preschool needs.  For those of you who know us we can be pretty full on most of the time.  Anyway Lara and Emily wanted to be part of the whole gift making process and so here are the pics.

Their classroom is called the Whales Room so we thought the little added bit to the front was quite cool .. oh and check out my sewing! BY HAND!

Avery Labels has some great fabric labels that I used to personalise the toy box which I stitched on to the back.  Very cool I thought.

Once again I need to give credit to Jerry for a very sturdy wooden box (made out of left overs in the garage) and then upholstering was done by the three girlies.

Wine:  Yes this was definitely needed to get this over the line.  Remember that it was birthday cake making time as well as trying to get this all done.  To be honest the whole week was a bit of a blur and I can’t be absolutely sure what wine I was drinking …. I think it was white :-) .. well 50% chance of getting that right if you exclude Rose which I’m sure we all agree isn’t a real wine.  I’m still convinced that it’s made by mixing red and white (just kidding I’m not such a philistine – rhymes with wine ****cracking up******)

Music: Bit cliche I know but the fact that we knocked this thing up in an evening, baked 2 cakes, packed 30 party packs I think We are the Champions is pretty apt.

Pssssst: If you’re planning on giving this a go stay away from that fur on the lid … fricken nightmare to vacuum even with my soooper dooooper cordless Dyson.

Adios muchachos.

Monday tomorrow so strength for the week ahead to you all.

xx

Project 16: Decals …. for the bathroom.

I know it’s been a while since my last post but I’ve been rather uninspired of late.  Fret not, fortunately that has passed, now I’m just fighting for time.

I saw a ‘Grab One’ deal come up and thought it was quite cool.  In hindsight I probably would have bought the white instead of the black but hey there you go.  I am one that generally pushes the button too soon if you remember the story of me accidentally buying a violin a few posts back.

Anyhoooo the inspiration for this one came from listening to myself repeating the same stuff over and over again.  For those of you born before 1980 will understand the association of sounding like a stuck record!  When I saw the advert I thought hey 90% of that stuff is what I spend most of my time saying to the kids.

Okay here is how it’s done:

If I knew that there would be a certain degree of skill required I might have done a trial on something slightly smaller.  Due to my lack of experience it probably took me twice as long as a pro and some pretty colourful language could have been avoided.  But, hey, you win some and your lose some.  Here are the pics and one of my little helper – Adam was also the photographer.  He’s doing a bit of ” ‘Sup dude”.

The trick to this is doing it in sections.  You’ll see that I was doing about 2 lines at a time. Firstly you stick the contact (plastic with one  sticky side) onto the words.  Stick the piece (paper and contact) to the wall with selotape (probably better off using masking tape but I couldn’t be asked to look for it).

Peel the contact off the white backing.  In a perfect world the letters should stick to the contact – yeah right!! anyway with a bit of encouragement they will.  Let the white backing fall away and then gently stick the contact with the letters to the wall.  Once you’ve smoothed it all down (a credit card works and fortunately doesn’t require any available credit), remove the contact carefully and again in a perfect world, the letters will be left on the wall.

It probably took me about 90 minutes to get this all done.

A few things to remember!

Clean the wall before you start and make sure its dry

Make sure you’re putting the words on straight.

Music: Norah Jones was playing – chosen by Gorgeous Jerry

Wine:  As I was doing this at about 10 in the morning and also bearing the steady hand required in mind I steered clear of the wine and was having a fine cup of coffee.  It was most delish and looking back was very sensible indeed!  I must finally be growing up.  Jed’s comes in different strengths.  Mild, Medium, Strong and something that could possibly be used to remove these letters when I finally get sick of them.

Psssst: there might have been a wee dash of something in that coffee!

Have a fab weekend.

Cheers m’dears

Project 15: FINALLY! There was a headboard! …………. part 2

Well after all this time and going on and on and ON AND ON about this headboard, now that it’s done it feels somewhat of an anticlimax (not the 50 shades of grey type) .. come on have a laugh.  Anyway here it is!

Before:                                                                                             After:

Gorgeous Jerry made a groovy bracket type thingy and then another one exactly the same but inverted and then screwed that one into the wall and then the headboard just clipped into it.  Very smart indeed.

Well the headboard turned out okay.  A little ‘poofy’ if I must be honest but I wanted the impact of the buttons to be quite intense which I think they are.  This is not a project for a shrinking violet .. you gotta be bold and have a bit of a Nike attitude … yip … if you’re keen “Just do it”.

The best part about this project if I’m honest was the fun my mom and I had doing this .. well okay maybe it had more to do with the wine tasting and having a good laugh but we had a ball.

Music: Watched Philadelphia the other night … wow what a fantastic movie .. this one came out when there was suddenly a big awareness about AIDS …. this is a great scene!

Wine: Had some friends around on Saturday night, met “her” through Trademe when I went to get some free cutlery just before Jerry and the kids arrived in NZ and we ended up having wine and having a right old yak!  Finally after 3 1/2 years we got together for dinner! Was so cool!  Wine of the night has to be Durbanville Hills Cab Sav/Merlot.  Just simply YUM!

Psssst: these are my ‘garage’ shoes.  Beauties aren’t they?  Socks and Sandals have got to be the biggest passion killer of all time!

Splendid week to all of you.

Happy days!

Project 15: FINALLY! There was a headboard! …………. part 1

yeah yeah I hear you all exhale a sigh of relief!!! Yip its DONE! ………….. but … there is a part 1 and a part 2 … since I’ve dragged this out for so long I may as well drag out part 2 for a bit …. what’s another few days hey? .. AND this is a long story!

So Nana came to visit and since she’s left I can blame the delay on her – she isn’t here to defend herself so I’m going with it.  A week or so before my mom arrived she asked if she could participate in one of the projects so I kept this one back as I knew it would be the perfect specimen for her to sink her teeth in to.  Okay if I must be honest I needed another set of hands so waited for her arrival.  Some photos of the first part of the task!

Nana with her 3 favorite grand kids (sorry other grand kids)

Okay so first I bought a single mattress as this was cheaper than buying foam cut to size and stuck it (spray glue) to a piece of MDF (better option that pine see mention of my past disaster here).

Then measured and cut holes in the foam for the buttons.  My scissors have serrations so they did a marvy job…. and here is another pic of me giving gorgeous Jerry some careful instructions (excuse the mess and the washing in the garage).

…. then a big thank you kissfor drilling all the holes for my buttons … let me tell you that this is not the task for the feint hearted!

Here are some pics of the job …

….and then some buttons!

Unfortunately you’ll need to wait for the next post to see the complete finished product.  As it turns out Nana was much better at taking photos and getting the wine than she was with getting up and down … something to do with knees and age.  I said that I had no idea what she was talking about oh my gawd if only she knew!!!!  Let me just say that she took those photos and delivered that wine with such finesse!

Wine for the task:  As this was a tough job … my suggestion is A LOT of whatever you’ve got going and after you see the video below you’re going to need a whole lot more!

Music:  Okay now people be kind!  Here is a clip of my violin skills or rather lack there of … I’m hoping that the before and after (in a years time) will be highlighted by just how bad this is (no mention of screeching cats please).  Enjoy! (don’t think Vanessa Mae has anything to worry about just yet) .. check me out here! Jerry was off to get the ear muffs!

Pssst:  Wish my mom could have stayed longer than a week!  We miss you already.

Blogging support…

As I’m fairly new to the blogging world I was VERY honored to be nominated for the Liebster award by one of my blogging buddies Riding the Crazy Train.

The idea is to acknowledge 11 of your favorite blogs by linking to them on your blog (they must have less than 200 followers) and by doing this we can all spread some bloggin’ lovin’, let them know that you’ve  mentioned them and sort of ‘pay it forward’.  You also need to ask 11 questions that your nominated bloggers need to answer to enable us all to get to know each other better.

My 11 fav blogs are:

Project 14: Mirror Mirror on the wall …..

… you’re the fairest of them all.

As I’ve mentioned in earlier posts our new house is so different to the one we had in South Africa .. based on this lots of things have gone from dark to light (making small areas seem just a tiny bit bigger) and this gorgeous mirror is no exception.  When gorgeous Jerry asked if I could paint the mirror rather than buy a new one I said “does the Pope have a balcony?? of course I can”.  So off I went.

Here’s the before and after:

Before:

After:

I love the mirror however popular consensus says (everyone except me) that the contrast between the mirror and brown/khaki couch is a bit severe so apparently I need to tone it down a bit.  What do they know!  Anyhow I’m waiting for some inspiration to give me some clues.

Suggested wine for the task: Arrogant Frog – I bought this the other night and I promise buying this had nothing to do with the fact that my mom was visiting from South Africa :-) .. anyway it was rather good, all the way from France.

Music: Chopin’s Nocturn Op.9 No.2 Nothing else needs to be said for this fabulous piece of music ….

Psssst ……. Glancing at your partner while watching a 3D movie always raises a smile .. is there anyone out there that looks suave in 3D glasses? I think NOT.

Headboard completed …. will be featured, center stage shortly.

The only constant in life is CHANGE ……..

…………. and change we have!  I’ve cracked open the first bottle of red this winter!  Okay it was a screw top.

Mae West once said that she likes two kinds of men: Foreign and Domestic.  Well I like two kinds of wine: Red and White! yip I think that sums it up!

For those few observant readers you will note that all the wine suggestions, from the beginning of this blog’s life (all 2 months of it), have been white.  Why?? well because I like it … A LOT!  To be honest I over did it on red a while back and I couldn’t even look at a bottle of red never mind smell it.  My sister will also tell you a story about when I was in my late teens about red wine and leaving me in the driveway .. in SOUTH AFRICA for a few hours! shocking!

Anyway I thought I’d tell you why I enjoy the whole culture of wine (or lack thereof on occasion).  This is the picture of wine drinking that sits in my mind.

We all have fabulous stories to tell about wine drinking times but to me it always makes me think of those precious snippets of time that we’ve shared .. mostly with wonderful people.  I’m fortunate enough not to have had too many vile wines (plenty of whines with my brood) but it is funny how you can take a pretty average bottle of wine, pour it in some long stemmed wine glasses, add some wonderful friends and suddenly the wine goes from a 6/10 to a 9/10.  I can’t say I’ve ever experienced it the other way around.  Even if the company is lousy and the wine is great, I kind of zone out from the company and viola …. the wine is still fab!  Not that I ever hang about if the company is dodgy .. but hey there you go!

Wine: I’m currently drinking an Italian wine … Volupta Montepulciano d’Ambruzzo – simply quite soooooper!

Music: Red red wine by UB40 I think?

Pssst: don’t you think I’d look great in this?

and a leaving thought … Money may not buy happiness but it will buy wine!

Project 13: The Grey Stripe Chair

Well here is my other chair attempt.  The story around the first chair (The White Stripe Chair) can be seen here.

I know that I haven’t posted in a while but I’ve been so busy … with what you might ask.  I could lie and say that being a mom to three littlies takes absolutely all my time but actually (due to kids having fab dad – thanks gorgeous Jerry) I’ve been rather social, out with the girls and trying some new and improved wines I’ve been doing some very important grown up stuff.  Really, I know we all go through phases and mine has been rather social of late.  Very cool indeed!

Before:                                                                                                  After:

Anyway moving on to the chair.  This transformation of this chair was quite easy…. Getting the cat pee smell out of the chair was NOT.  Even after I took the fabric off the chair the foam still had ‘that smell’.  For those of you that have cats, this smell will be rather familiar.  The problem is that when you live with this smell for too long you stop noticing it.  You think that it’s gone but in reality you’ve just got used to it.  So when you say to your visitors I’m so glad that the cat pee smell is gone and they smile at you politely what they’re actually saying is ‘ummmmmm NO IT HASN’T’.  I seem to be veering off again.

This chair was one of the pair that I bought from a deceased estate, honestly, by the smell of the chair I thought the chair had died and had already started decomposing aaaaaaaargh back to the chair!  Okay so I ripped off the stinky fabric and foam, found this cool dark grey fabric from Spotlight and sprayed the wood with my good, loyal Wagner.  I’m sure you’ll agree that it looks pretty flash.  What do you think?

A few updates:

  • ·         This chair sold in a day on Trademe
  • ·         The Ottoman below sold over the weekend so our house is once again clutter free.

Bring on the headboard I hear you say.  Okay the story with the headboard is this.  I went out and bought two planks of wood for Gorgeous Jerry to join (big headboard) which he did.  I then lay the large piece on top of a box in the garage and it has now warped.  Apparently I should have gone for plywood instead of pine.  Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn’t it?  Anyway onwards and upwards and hopefully this will be ready for posting after the weekend.

Wine: Today it can be whatever blows your hair back … or if you want to stick with me how about some Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc – tons of the stuff in your local Countdown in New Zealand.  Below is a pic of where the wine farm is and where we used to live in South Africa … no wonder I’m so familiar with this wine.

Music: To tie in to the theme of the chair how about Empty Chairs by Don Mclean – nothing quite like the sound of an acoustic guitar is there?

Pssst:  Tupperware is far cooler than I thought.  Had a great afternoon with the girls and even had a chance to sample a Pinot Gris mixed with a Chardonnay (thanks Robyn) – don’t ask!

Fab weekend everyone – okay its only Wednesday but the weekend will here soon.

Cheers to new friendships!

On Thursday night I was fortunate enough to head out for an adult evening.  Gorgeous Jerry was travelling for work (bring on Friday night) so I was solely left in charge of our 3 little critters ones.  Fortunately we had the Scotsman staying with us so after I got the pinkies in bed off I went.  (Scotsman was left to do the year 2 reading with Adam).

Now the lady I was having dinner with is a client from a previous job and we met up again through linkedin (gotta love social media) .. she had a look at my blog liked what she saw but wow was I impressed about what she does for the creativity bit in her life.  Bit of a dark horse that one.  Yes the below pics are CAKES!

Anyway if you want to see her stuff check out her facebook page here.

So anyway not only did we have a night of kiddieless wonder we also ate the most stunning authentic Italian food – place is called Gusto Italiano (I now see that they also have an opera night coming up on Wednesday).  Can you just imagine 3 kids under 7 sitting through that!!!  Some things in life are NOT to be shared with our little people.

Anyway I digress so there we are chatting and after having 2 glasses of some fab vino (I had some Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Italy, the “cake lady” settled for something red) we both had the most stunning pastas and then finished off with sharing a Tiramisu and a cheese platter.  We spoke about our travels, our lives BC (before children), partners, work and lots of bit and pieces in between.  We both agreed that ‘The Big Blue’ is one of the most fab movies of all time (not sure if that is because of the underwater theme of the movie or the fact that Jean-Marc Bar stars in it) anyway if you haven’t seen it I suggest that you try to get your hands on it.

The night went by far too quickly but as they said in Casablanca “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Wine … Anything Italian

Music .. the soundrack from the Big Blue

Psssst …. headboard is coming!  Suffering from sense of humor failure at the moment with this one but as I am sometimes unrealistically optimistic it will see the light of day.

Fab week ahead everyone!
